It is October. You know what that means?
Fall/autumn. Leaves turning pretty colors. And Halloween.
When I think of Halloween, one of the things that I always think about is my Sergeant Mike’s Miracle Tour series.
In 2011, I had just taken @PanKwake out of school. We had moved into that small, dingy flat in North London. And I had given my notice at my job. I was, like Jaycee, a single parent to a child with special needs.
The only thing I had that was all my own was my writing.
So, it was that the deadline was fast approaching for the Halloween contest at Lit. And I had not had time to do much writing. But that morning @PanKwake slept in late. In the space of three hours, I wrote three-thousand words that would place 3rd in the contest and continue to haunt my dreams – to this day.
Red, White, and Blue Halloween became Esther’s Story. But it was as much Sergeant Mike in my head as this grieving mother. What was this man’s backstory? Where had he come from? What experiences had shaped him into the person and leader that he was?
All of that began to unwind in My Country Tis of Thee, the story of Mike’s retirement and the funeral of the last man to die under his watch, a young Latino serving a country that was not his own.
This series has been haunted with mishaps, though. I have three times lost or had files corrupted. Being forced to begin again. But in the end, I got there.
Well, to a mid-way point, at least.
At this point in the story, Mike and Esther are ‘together.’ Though neither knows what that means. It is called a Happy For Now ending in the romance/erotica genre.
While other stories have pushed their way to the forefront of my priorities, this series remains special to me. And yes, I will finish it. One day, some day.
But since it is October and Halloween, and since this month and next are shaping up to be of ‘historical’ proportions for the land of my birth, the place I called ‘home’ for most of my life, and for the very ideals that the Sergeant Mike’s of this world hold dear, I thought that I would tackle editing and posting that series to my books page this month.
So, yes, for those Lit readers who wanted the Book 3 Shared Burdens that was rejected as a duplicate of Esther’s Story – despite being almost twice as long with new material from Mike’s perspective…you will finally get that HERE.
But don’t worry, I have not forgotten our gang that’s in #TroubleTexasStyle. My editing and website time is different from my precious ‘writing’ time that I do right after that first cup of coffee every morning.
And if you have not guessed yet, there’s a secret hidden in these stories… But no more spoilers.
So, while I go off to Grandfather’s ranch in Comfort, Texas to check in on Ryan, Laura, Chloe, Jack, and all the rest, you can take this opportunity to discover or rediscover Master Sergeant Michael Thomas O’Malley, USMC retired.
Highway to Heaven meets the USMC
Master Sergeant Michael O’Malley is a man on a mission. After over twenty years in the US Marine Corps and more tours of duty than he wants to remember, his retirement plans are simple: hop on the back of his brand new Harley and tour the country, checking in on the men and women that he served with…and the families of the ones that never made it back.
So, this month look for a new chapter each day. Beginning with Book 1 – My Country Tis of Thee today.
Goddess bless and keep you and yours,
