Women are refusing to age ‘gracefully.’ To cover their mature bodies in old house dresses, abandon their sexuality and slink off to a rocking chair somewhere.
Sarandon became the latest controversy when she attended the SAG Awards (Screen Actors Guild) wearing a white suit with a black bra that showed her 60+ year old cleavage. And while there was not enough to motor boat, it was certainly very nice, natural breasts. I would not kick the woman out of my bed that is for sure.
But the rude, sexist and ageist remarks that hit social media as a result was vicious. The obvious one being the play on the ‘sag’ awards. All things considering, that was a very inaccurate description, unless of course you are talking about silicone fakes that will be standing at attention a hundred years after you are dead and buried.
On a night when practically sheer gowns, low neck lines and slits right up to the fountain of the goddess reigned on the red carpet, why does a conservative business suit with a bit of tit rank such notice? The sad truth is that if this photograph were posted on social media without the head…no one knowing the age of that rack…then it would maybe garner a couple of like, but definitely not stir such controversy.
The problem is that this is another example of our Western Madonna/whore complex. It is perfectly fine when one of the younger women accidentally flashed nipple. But a woman over 35 or is it 40 these days? Maybe 45? By that age women are no longer supposed to flaunt their sexuality…be whores. They must cover their breasts and become demure matrons.
Why?
Why must we cease to be sexual beings? When we become mothers? When we reach a certain age…whatever that is these days?
This one in particular touches close to home. At fifty, I love to wear mini-skirts. And my older/adult children HATE it. I have told them…too damned bad as long as my legs hold up I am wearing them.
Last summer, I was walking near my home wearing my favorite. A woman…yes a woman…an Asian one too from a conservative culture…approached me and politely said: “Excuse me, I don’t mean to be rude or forward, but I wanted to tell you what nice legs you have.” This was either just before or after my ‘traumatic’ 50th birthday…and it made my day.
So hell yeah I am wearing them still. I don’t even pack them away for winter. I just put on thick tights to keep them warm.
This is yet another example of the unrealistic images of beauty and sexuality that pervades our culture. Size don’t matter. Age don’t matter. You know what matters most? What is sexiest? Happiness and confidence. If you wear those, then you can ‘pull’ and ‘bat above your average’ every time.
While I am not saying to forsake the gym or make-up, to let those grays grow out…I am saying that all the pretty in the world will not make-up for a selfish, ugly heart.
No, Susan Sarandon rocked that outfit not because of her outer beauty, but because of her inner confidence. She is a woman, who knows who she is…and won’t apologize to anyone for being herself. That is sexy…all day and night long.

Totally agree with you! Hell yes. Do the best you can to maintain the outside but ultimately its confidence and radiance from the inside that is our greatest source of beauty, no matter the age in years. Keep on rocking your miniskirts, girlfriend.
