This one is to my best friend, who is discovering the trials and joys of being alone…perhaps for the first time ever. That is not an easy place to be…I know. Here are the words of my favorite author and philosopher, Dr. Seuss:
I’m afraid that some times
you’ll play lonely games too.
Games you can’t win
’cause you’ll play against you.
All alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
You’ll be quiet a lot.
And when you’re alone, there’s a very good chance
you’ll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won’t want to go on.
He is right, of course. When you are alone that is when you meet those things that scare you right out of your pants and make you not want to go on. Those things inside of you. Your doubts. Your fears. Your insecurities. Your past. Your future. With no one else around to talk to, listen to or be with, you are forced to face it all. All those what if’s. Shoulda and coulda and woulda. The who do you think you are. All of the ugly shit that you don’t want anyone else to see. You don’t want to see it either. But there it is…and it won’t be quiet.
It reminds me of this scene from Star Wars (don’t ask me which one…they re-numbered them and it confused me)…
I spent about a year in that place. Learning me…my past mistakes, my needs, my wants and re-discovering some lost dreams. I learned my power…and my weakness. I grew. And most important of all, I learned to love myself (well, my tummy and I still have a ways to go, but we are working on it). That was my relationship goal for 2015…to love myself.
That is the cornerstone of all other relationships in your life. If you don’t know your own value, you will either sell yourself short or be too pricey.
I came out of it with some pretty amazing people in my life. People I am free to love in ways I never could before…because you see once you have been there…once you have faced those demons…you can love without fear. Well, mostly, anyway. Because the worst that can happen…ending up alone…you have been there and done that. And it ain’t as scary a place as you thought it was.
So, this is my wish for him and for you…
But on you will go
though the weather be foul.
On you will go
though your enemies prowl.
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl.
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.
On and on you will hike.
And I know you’ll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are….
And will you succeed?
Yes, You will, indeed!
