As I get back to writing the third and final (I hope) book in the Ægir’s trilogy, chapter one is the homecoming of Kirsty’s guys from their fishing trip. Yes…Bjorn and Mikael kept their promise not to be gone for more than a week. No…unfortunately Sven did not end up sleeping with the fish. But as I am also re-writing and editing Ægir’s Captive one of the biggest changes will be setting.
In the rough drafts at Literotica, I was not very specific about where…though roughly speaking I had thought of the Aaland Islands between Sweden and Finland. Then I became on-line friends with someone from Norway, who is helping me to add flavor to the stories with a smattering of Swedish. He also cued me into this amazing place called Lofoten in Norway…that perfectly fit this story.
It really is perfect in so many ways…
- Fishing really is the primary livelihood there still. And it can be year round as the fjords never completely freeze over…added bonus those winter months are the most lucrative…and most dangerous.
- It is so sparsely populated that get this…there are hardly any police…so they really could get away with kidnapping her.
- The towns are tiny and tightly knit…though they would be that bit of the outsider that I depicted.
- And get this…they have this really wonderful colorful local dialect and sayings…like men calling one another…horse cocks. My favorite so far is instead of pussy whipped…Mikael and Bjorn are ‘slipper heroes’ in Sven’s eyes.
But for someone as overwhelmed by the noise, crowding and aloftness of London, Kirsty like me would instantly fall in love with this scenic place as much as her men…her new daughter…and the mother (in-law) that she had always wanted. Want to see what I mean?
As an author, setting usually does not play much of a role in my stories…characters are the main focus. And while Kirsty, Sven, Mikael, Bjorn and even Rachel/Petrine, Olaf and Monika remain the main focus of this story…this land, this place will play a more prominent part in shaping the story and their characters.
So what do you think of this place? And yes, I am hoping/planning to visit there soon. Though I am going to have to take a plane, train and ferry to get there…and not the fun route that Kirsty got…being captured by three hot local fishermen. A girl can always hope though, right?
